Italian language in Kosovo: a week dedicated to literature, games, music and films

From 17 to 23 October the XXII edition of the “Italian Language Week in the World” will be celebrated under the theme “Italian and young people. Sorry what? Non ti followo”. Launched in 2001 in collaboration with the “Accademia della Crusca”, it is implemented by the diplomatic-consular network and the Italian Cultural Institutes, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of University and Research, the Swiss Government and the main partners in language promotion.

The decision to dedicate ‘the Week’ to the new generations responds to the desire to convey to “to the young through the young” the contemporaneity of the Italian language and culture. The new generations not only represent the privileged audience of the initiative, but they are also and above all its protagonists: an evolving language cannot ignore the young. ‘The Week’ intends therefore to act as a platform of listening and dialogue between the institutions and those who are the main creators of this contemporaneity, in order to enhance, in Italy and abroad, the image of a language and a country strong in their past, but at the same time alive and creative in the present.

For this “Week”, the Italian Embassy in Pristina – in cooperation with the Faculty of Philology of the University “Hasan Prishtina”, the “Don Bosko” School, the “Dante Center”, the “Kino Armata” Foundation and the “Dukagjini Bookstore” – offers a series of events dedicated to an audience with distinct interests.

The week begins with two mornings (Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th October) dedicated to recreational activities in the Italian language which will involve pupils of Italian from primary, middle and high school classes of the “Don Bosko” school in Pristina.

On Thursday 20th October at 16:00, in the Hall “Idriz Ajeti” of the Faculty of Philology of the “Hasan Prishtina” University, the comedy “The ‘intrepid” by Gianni Amelio (Italian with English subtitles) will be screened. It is a film that lightly describes the difficulties and hence the importance of remaining “human” in lives characterized by precariousness. The screening will be preceded by a musical moment brought by Arjeta Krosa and Rrezarta Ramadani (by Bellini, “Cara luna”; from Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro “L’ho perduta … me meschina”; from Rossini’s Cenerentola “Non più mesta”).

On Friday 21 October at 17:00, at the Dukagjini Bookshop in Pristina, Aida Baro, editor-in-chief of the publishing house ‘Pegi’, will present the recent translation into Albanian of Alberto Moravia’s novel “La vita interior” (Time of Desecration), the dialogue with the audience will take place in Albanian and Italian).

The festival will end on Saturday 22 October at 19:00, at the “Kino Armata” cinema in Pristina, with the screening of the comedy “La nostra terra” (translated into English as “Mafia and Red Tomatoes”) by Giulio Manfredonia (in Italian with English subtitles, free admission), which depicts the vicissitudes of a group of unhinged young idealists, members of a social cooperative in southern Italy, grappling with the complexities of managing a farm given to them by the State on land confiscated from organized crime. The film will be introduced (in Albanian) by the Director of the ‘Centro Dante’ in Pristina, Arjeta Berisha.

“I am particularly pleased to present the programme of the ‘Week of the Italian Language in the World’, this year focused on young people, at the beginning of a school and academic year that shows a strong interest in every age group, from children to adults, in learning our language, also through courses actively supported by our Embassy. Beyond the intrinsic value of the cultural exchange between our two countries, which is increasingly intense, the experience is showing us how many studying and working opportunities open up to those in Kosovo who have a good command of Italian,’ explained Ambassador Antonello De Riu.
