“Di quell’amor ch’è palpito | dell’universo intero, | misterioso, altero, | croce e delizia al cor.”
This is probably the verse that encapsulates the insightful meaning of one of the most popular Italian operas of all time and, not surprisingly, one of the absolutely most performed operas.
‘La Traviata’ speaks about love, the contradictory feeling that rises up to the heavens and, with the same intensity, touches the bottom. Giuseppe Verdi, the Italian composer “par excellence”, turned the story of the protagonist, Violetta, into a drama without time and space boundaries.
So, why should an opera of almost 170 years old be staged today? The answer is clear: the destiny of ‘La Traviata’ is linked to the great questions of human existence, to the success and failure of love, to the crucial question of the Ego. An iconic opera, which has had such an influence on the history of Italian culture. Arias that became famous, music and text fused together to consign to eternity the character of Violetta, a young and unfortunate woman whose only fault was that of desperately loving.
