On the occasion of the 16th anniversary of Kosovo’s independence, Italian President Sergio Mattarella sent a letter of good wishes to his counterpart, Vjosa Osmani Sadriu.

“The geopolitical challenges that our continent is called upon to face at this historical moment require a renewed impetus of the European project, which cannot prescind from the integration of the Western Balkan countries. In this context, on its path towards the European Union, Kosovo can continue to count on Italy’s full support” Mattarella wrote.

The letter also included a reference to reforms and the Pristina-Belgrade Dialogue facilitated by Brussels. “In order for the EU goal to be crowned with the desired success, renewed and constructive efforts are needed on the reform front and in the process of normalising relations with Serbia”.

In closing, Mattarella renewed Italy’s commitment to support Pristina. “In confirming that Italy will remain at Kosovo’s side in the consolidation of its democratic institutions and security – also through its participation in the KFOR mission – I renew my cordial good wishes for your personal well-being as well as for the people of Kosovo, our friend”, Mattarella added.
