Electronic Identity Card

How to apply for an Electronic Identity Card

In order to apply for an Electronic Identity Card (EID), it is mandatory to make an appointment via Prenot@mi, filling in each required field accurately and for each applicant (including any spouse and children).

Please note that it is compulsory to indicate first name, surname, date and place of birth; marital status (free, married, divorced, etc.); address of residence and household composition, especially if there are minor children.

It is necessary to bear in mind that the processing of an Electronic Identity Card application requires some time. It is therefore advisable to book the appointment at the Embassy by selecting on the Prenot@mi portal a date at least 15 days after the time of booking. All applicants (including minors) must have the fiscal code (those without one should send an email to: consolare.pristina@esteri.it).

In order to avoid having to go to the Embassy more than once, it is necessary for the above data (name, surname, date, place of birth, etc.) to be perfectly aligned with those held by the municipality of AIRE registration.

For any updates to your data (in case of marriage or birth of children, change of address) not previously communicated to the consular office, use the FAST-IT portal and write an e-mail to consolare.pristina@esteri.it.

On the day of the appointment, it is necessary to appear in person at the Embassy for fingerprinting (fingerprints are not required for children under 12 years of age, for whom presence is still necessary in order to be identified).

On the day of the appointment, the applicant shall be present himself/herself with:

  1. completed and signed application form;
  2. previous identity card; or if you have no other identification document, it is required the presence of two witnesses who are not relatives of the person concerned; or if the EID is required for a minor, the accompanying parent must be present and identify himself by an identification document;
  3. 1 biometric photograph (recent, frontal, colour, 35 x 45 mm format).

If the electronic identity card is requested for a minor child, a specific application form shall be completed, including the consent form for the issuance of the CIE if one of the parents is absent

The electronic identity card (EIC) will be sent from Italy directly to the foreign address of the person concerned (it is of fundamental importance to update the current and precise address of the applicant).

The cost of the card is Euro 21.95, of which: Euro 16.79 card cost (13.76 + VAT 22% Euro 3.03) + Euro 5.16 fixed fee; or, for DUPLICATE EIC (in case of theft, loss or deterioration of the previous EIC still valid), Euro 27.11, of which: Euro 16.79 card cost (13.76 + VAT 22% Euro 3.03) + Euro 10.32 fixed fee.

The request for DUPLICATE EID FOR NON-DELIVERY (not due to the responsibility of the applicant) is instead free of charge.

Please note that the EIC can be requested once the applicant’s identity card has expired (from the one hundred and eightieth day before the expiry date) or following its loss, theft or deterioration.

The EIC may be renewed as from the 180th day prior to its expiry date, while, on the basis of art. 24 par. 3 of L.D. no. 76/2020, applications for the issue of the EIC submitted by nationals already in possession of a PIC (Paper Identity Card) or old-generation EIC that is still valid (and therefore before the 180 days prior to its expiry date) may also be accepted, the fee envisaged for ‘issue’ and not for ‘duplicate’ being applied in such cases.
