  1. What is it?

The tax code is an alphanumeric code issued by the Revenue Agency to identify citizens (Italian or foreign) in their relations with public administrations, private individuals and Italian organizations. For individuals, the tax code is determined on the basis of personal data.

  1. What is it for?

Any administrative fulfilment (payment of taxes, duties, fees, etc.) or negotiation activity (acceptance of inheritance, contracts with public or private entities, requests for financing, sponsorships, leases or free loans of real estate, etc.) requires the indication of the tax code of the person carrying it out.

  1. How can I submit the request?

Italian citizens resident abroad can apply for a tax code through the Consular Office, as well as directly at the offices of the Revenue Agency located on Italian territory, according to art. 1 of the implementing Ministerial Decree dated 17 May 2001, n. 281, taking into account the wide distribution and widespread presence of Revenue Agency offices in Italy.

Italian citizens of legal age registered in AIRE can request a tax code for themselves and their minor children through the Fast-it online portal by accessing the relevant service and following the instructions. The tax code certificate can also be directly downloaded through the Fast-it portal once the procedure has been completed.

How?

  1. Log in to the Fast It Portal;
  2. Click on “Consular Registry and AIRE” and then on “Tax Code Attribution”;
  3. Confirm the data and start the request;
  4. Once the request has been processed by the Consular Office, you may download the tax code certificate.

 If you cannot download the tax code certificate:

  1. Register on the FAST IT portal, or log in if you already have an active account;
  2. Request the ‘Online Association’ by clicking on ‘Consular Registry and AIRE’ and then on ‘View your personal data sheet’;
  3. You will receive an email confirming the association.
  4. Log in again to the portal and download the certificate.

Citizens years 18 years old registered with AIRE who already have a tax code can download the tax code certificate directly through the Fast-it electronic portal by accessing the relevant service and following the instructions provided to request the tax code; in this case, the intervention of the Consulate will not be necessary for the issuance of the certificate.

Those who also wish to receive the tax code card must apply for both the tax code and the card by submitting the appropriate form together with a copy of an identity document.

In case of loss or destruction of the paper certificate or the plastic card, a duplicate can be requested in the same way as the original.
